Does Reducing Googlebots Crawl Rate Have a Negative Effect?

In episode 123 of the weekly Hump Day Hangouts by Semantic Mastery, one viewer asked whether reducing the crawl rate of Googlebots can
have a negative effect on a site’s ranking.

The exact question was:

does reducing googlebots crawl rate effect anything negatively? the reason im
asking is a project ive been working on the last 4 months made a jump in serps
in january and the site before that date had 7000 pages a day crawled and 600mb
of data downloaded (info source: G analytics crawl data) – mid january the
crawled pages, data downloaded and hosting costs spiked massively ie 60000
pages per day crawled and 3.6gb of data downloaded and thats been constant at
that new rate now since mid jan – traffics up but hosting costs have hiked
massively
