So, you’ve probably heard about the Google announcement back in 2016 dealing with mobile user experience…right?
If not, you might not be aware that they announced that as of January 10, 2017, “pages where content is not easily accessible to a user on the transition from the mobile search results may not rank as highly”.
Hmmm…along with their images showing what they consider to be “bad” pop ups and interstitials, most people might want to check this out!
Luckily, Hernan made some changes on the Semantic Mastery website to make sure we were offering a good experience while complying with the new mobile search requirements – and he recorded a video showing you exactly what we did:
The good news?
It’s not that hard to reconfigure and most cases are very easy to deal with – either delaying a pop up based on user interaction via:
- Timed delay, or
- User movement of the page (i.e. waiting until the page has been scrolled)
Hopefully this gets you moving in the right direction – providing a good user experience while also not suffering from a negative ranking signal!

While this was done on our site using Ninja Pop Ups, the same applies no matter what WordPress plugin you are using, or if you are on a different CMS altogether.
